What is IPL?

Georgia Mountain Ophthalmology

Lauren Yancey, OD

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a treatment for dry eyes that uses light pulses to improve the function of the meibomian glands in the eyelids. These glands produce oils that protect the eyes and help tears stay stable.

IPL can help with the following:

  • Dry eye symptoms: IPL can reduce symptoms of dry eye, including chronic dry eye and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

  • Tear quality: IPL can improve tear quality and tear breakup time.

  • Vision correction: IPL can improve visual outcome for cataract surgery.

  • Inflammation: IPL can reduce inflammation around the meibomian glands.

  • Bacteria: IPL may have an antibacterial effect.
