Matthew Camp is a fellowship trained and Board certified
vitreo-retinal surgeon who has recently moved his
ophthalmology practice to Jasper.
Dr. Camp was born and raised in Smyrna, Georgia, a town about
the size of Jasper at the time. During high school he received
his first “hands-on” medical experience in the ER at Smyrna
Hospital. From there, he attended the University of Georgia
and graduated Summa cum Laude with a bachelor of science in
Microbiology. At the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), Dr.
Camp excelled in his studies, earning honors as the top
freshman with a 4.0 GPA and was later named Physician’s
Physician of his graduating class.
After his marriage to Dr. Paige B. Camp (Dermatology) during
their senior year, the Camps remained in Augusta to complete
their training. Dr. Camp completed his Internship with the
Internal Medicine’s Rotating Internship program, where he
gained experience in Emergency Medicine, Plastic Surgery,
Nephrology, and Cardiology, among other rotations. He then
began a three year residency at the MCG Department of
Ophthalmology, where he served as chief resident. He also
participated in several research projects which allowed him to
lecture and present his findings annually at MCG’s Resident’s
Day and twice in Ft. Lauderdale at the ARVO convention.
Following residency, Dr. Camp accepted a position as Fellow in
Vitreoretinal surgery at Eye Consultants of Atlanta (Piedmont
Hospital) which he completed in 1999. Prior to opening Georgia
Mountain Ophthalmology he has practiced in Dunwoody,
Georgia. His desire to return to the people and values of a
smaller community has led him to shift his practice focus to
Jasper. Dr. Camp is the first retinal specialist and the only
ophthalmologist to practice in Pickens County, and treats
diseases of the posterior segment of the eye including diabetic
retinopathy, age related macular degeneration, and retinal
tears and detachments.
